Balayage vs. Ombré -What's the difference?

So you've decided to get some colour done. Great! Colour is an amazing option, and there's a style of colour out there for everyone. Now you just have to figure out what you want: Ombré? Sombré? Balayage? Foilayage? What even are all of these things? How are you supposed to know the difference? Alexa, what do I do with my hair?! Luckily, we're here today to make things a little easier.

The Root of the Problem

Every day, the main concern we hear from clients is “I don't want anything high maintenance.” Luckily, there are some amazing options for those of you who can't make it to the salon every 8 weeks to touch up your highlights, but still want to have beautiful, multi-tonal hair. Regardless of your personal style, hair type, or complexion, balayage works for everyone!

Gone are the days of your mama's highlights; it's 2020, and ain't nobody got time for that. Balayage is your best option for low maintenance, high impact colour. But what is balayage? What makes it different from ombré or traditional highlights?

Highlights to the Scalp? Not in Front of my Salad

Balayage comes from a French word meaning “sweep”. It's a technique in colouring hair that involves freehand painting pieces of hair. The roots are left darker, either with the client's natural hair colour as a base, or a separate permanent colour “tapped in” to create more dimension. The result is a natural, sun-kissed look that grows out well and can last clients up to 6 months.

The technique developed from the ombré style that was popular in the early 2010s. The main difference, however, is that ombré is more of a dramatic, two-toned effect, while balayage is a softer, more dimensional look. With a balayage, you can get your hair lighter nearly all-over, without the pain of that dreaded bi-monthly touch up.
